The laser therapy directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at your irregular skin. Laser age spot removal removes skin very precisely by vaporizing it. Lasers will remove the outer layer of your skin, the epidermis, and heat the underlying layer, called the dermis. The laser stimulates the growth of new collagen fibers, resulting in new skin that is smoother and firmer. This popular procedure is called several names, including lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.

You could be an ideal candidate if you have:

  • Age spots, or liver spots.
  • Sun-damaged skin.
  • Scars from acne or chickenpox.
  • Uneven skin pigmentation.
  • Skin scars or birthmarks.
  • Non-responsive skin after a facelift.
  • Fine lines or wrinkles around or under the eyes, forehead or mouth.
  • Enlarged oil glands on your nose.

You might not be a good candidate if you have:

  • Active acne.
  • Very dark skin.
  • Deep wrinkles.
  • Excessive or sagging skin.

What Are Age Spots?

Age spots are flat, light brown to black lesions, usually in sun-exposed skin areas. They are usually small, with diameters less than 1 millimeter to a few centimeters. With continued sun exposure, they can grow and merge, forming lesions with irregular borders.

Age spots are also called other names, like brown spots, liver spots, and sunspots. These terms either refer to their physical appearance or how they form. This condition affects fair-skinned individuals more than those with skin of color, and it will appear in middle to late adulthood. Years of tanning treatments can increase its occurrence, even in sun-protected areas.

Age spots differ from freckles, which are common among younger people. Freckles often vanish after weeks of sun avoidance, while age spots are more permanent.

The Laser Age Spot Removal Procedure

There are two forms of laser age spot removal at Downtown Esthetics and Wellness. First, there is carbon dioxide, CO2, and erbium lasers. These lasers will create a uniform injury to your skin in the treatment area. The other form is called fractionated CO2 laser treatment. Fractionated CO2 laser treatment involves using the laser to drill many narrow columns of holes deep into the layers of your skin, with the surrounding skin remaining untreated and intact.

Downtown Esthetics and Wellness will determine which kind of laser age spot removal treatment is best for you after an evaluation of your medical history, your current physical condition, and your desired results.

What Can Happen After Laser Age Spot Removal?

All forms of laser therapy are performed on an outpatient basis, using local anesthesia or sedative medications if needed. Wrinkles around your eyes, mouth, or forehead might be treated individually. Here is what to expect:

  • The areas to be treated are numbed with a local anesthetic. General anesthesia might be used if your entire face is treated. A partial-face treatment takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the full-face treatment can take over an hour.
  • Your area to be treated with be thoroughly cleaned.
  • After the laser process, a nonstick dressing is applied for 24 hours. You then clean the treated areas two to five times a day with saline solution. An ointment or moisturizing cream are then applied. The purpose is to prevent any scab formation. Usually, the areas heal in five to 21 days.
  • Once the areas have healed, makeup may be worn to camouflage the color after laser age spot removal. The redness in the laser-treated sites generally fades in several months but can take longer to disappear.
