Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers help to diminish your facial lines and restore the volume and fullness in your face. As we age, our faces will naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles will then work closer to the skin surface, so your smile lines and crow's feet become more evident.

The facial skin will also stretch, adding to the loss of facial volume. Other factors affecting your facial skin include sun exposure, your heredity, and your lifestyle.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal filler injections are a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure. Dermal fillers will plump up wrinkles, smooth out lines, and restore volume to your face.

You may choose to get dermal fillers to enhance your facial features or restore a more youthful appearance. This elective treatment usually takes less than an hour, and recovery time is minimal. Results are seen immediately and will last months, depending on the kind of filler and the location.

There are several kinds of dermal fillers. Downtown Esthetics and Wellness will discuss your options with you. Health insurance plans usually do not cover elective cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers.

Why Are Dermal Fillers Used?

As we age, our bodies begin to lose collagen. Collagen is an essential substance that exists in your entire body, including in your skin, muscles, bones, and connective tissues. Decreased collagen in your skin causes skin laxity, loose skin, and loss of volume. Your skin becomes thinner, loses its elasticity, and begins to sag.

You might choose to get dermal fillers to:

  • Plump up lips and cheeks.
  • Enhance shallow contours.
  • Smooth wrinkles and creases in your face.
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars.
  • Reconstruct contour deformities in the face.
  • Decrease or remove the shadow of the lower lids.
  • Add volume to sagging skin.
  • Make your facial features more symmetrical.

The Dermal Filler Procedure

You can receive your dermal filler at Downtown Esthetics and Wellness. Once your plan is discussed and confirmed, we will clean your skin, and we might apply a lotion or cream with an anesthetic. The anesthetic will numb the area, so your treatment will be more comfortable.

Using a tiny needle, we will inject tiny amounts of the dermal filler under your skin. The needle could pinch or sting, but most patients do not experience pain during these injections. We might inject the fillers into several areas. The entire process might take a few minutes or up to an hour.

What Are the Different Types of Dermal Fillers?

There are many kinds of dermal fillers. The types of off-the-shelf fillers include:

  • Hyaluronic acid, HA, is a naturally occurring acid in your skin. It will give your skin volume and keep it hydrated. With aging, your body stops making this hyaluronic acid. Results from HA injections usually last six months to a year. Restylane® is a commonly used type of HA filler.
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite, CaHA, is a type of dermal filler that consists of a substance you have in your bones. Results from these fillers usually last about a year. Downtown Esthetics and Wellness will usually use CaHA fillers for deeper wrinkles. Examples of CaHA fillers include Radiesse®.
  • Poly-L-lactic acid, PLLA, is a substance that encourages your body to create its own collagen. Downtown Esthetics and Wellness usually use poly-L-lactic acid to smooth deep wrinkles on your face. The results can last two years. Types of PLLA fillers include Sculptra®.
  • Polymethylmethacrylate, PMMA, dermal fillers consist of collagen and very tiny balls that stay under your skin after we inject them. These tiny balls give your skin volume and keep it firm. Bellafill® is one type of PMMA filler

Downtown Esthetics and Wellness will review the types of dermal fillers and discuss the right option for you. We will establish realistic goals together and confirm the results you can expect after receiving the injections.
